DETAILS:

  • Will produce bright orange, yellow or reddish flowers.
  • Flowers June to August.
  • When in bloom, this plant attracts butterflies and numerous other insects.
  • Adapted to dry, sandy or rocky soils of prairies, roadsides, and waste places.
  • Has a deep taproot which makes it very drought tolerant.
  • The Omaha and Ponca Indians used the roots to treat respiratory problems, as did the early pioneers.
  • Milkweeds are poisonous to livestock, but the plants are so unpalatable, livestock will not consume them by choice.
