Frequently Asked Questions About Wildflower Seed Mixes

Depending on seed availability, wildflower seed can ship as quickly as the next business day.

Some of the benefits of planting wildflower seed blends include:

  • Supporting pollinators and wildlife
  • Adding beautiful color to a landscape
  • Preventing erosion
  • Improving below and above ground biodiversity

They’re also environmentally friendly!

To prepare your site for planting a wildflower seed mix, follow these instructions:

  1. Prepare a weed-free seedbed, either mechanically or with herbicides. Gently break up the soil to receive the seed.
  2. Wait until after the first freeze in the fall before planting. This ensures that the seed from warm-season wildflowers will not germinate until conditions are favorable in the spring while allowing cool-season wildflowers an opportunity to germinate. Evenly spread seed over the prepared seedbed and lightly rake or roll the seed into no deeper than the top 1/4 inch of soil. Do not plant too deep.

Also, be on the lookout and terminate pesky weeds that could out-compete your new wildflowers.

No, irrigation is not required, but it is helpful to provide your wildflower mix with irrigation during establishment.

If irrigation is available, fill the soil profile to field capacity prior to planting. After planting, frequent shallow watering is recommended until the seedlings are established and have begun to develop a secondary root system. During these waterings, there should not be water standing or running off at any time.

Once the wildflowers are well established, reduce the frequency of waterings and increase their depth.

Do not overwater. Wildflowers are hardy and do not like soggy soil.

How long it takes wildflower seeds to mature depends largely on the type of seeds you are planting and the time of year. We highly recommend planting wildflowers in the fall after the first freeze. Naturally, the wildflowers will remain dormant until spring, with blooms arriving a month or two after germination.

Most native species will germinate in ten to fourteen days if temperatures are above 65 degrees Fahrenheit and have adequate soil moisture.
