Frequently Asked Questions About Wildflower Seed Mixes

Depending on your order size and seed availability, wildflower seed can ship as quickly as the same day.

Some of the benefits of planting wildflower seed blends include:

  • Supporting pollinators and wildlife
  • Adding beautiful color to a landscape
  • Preventing erosion
  • Improving below and above ground biodiversity

They’re also environmentally friendly!

To prepare your site for planting a wildflower seed mix, follow these instructions:

  1. Determine your soil type – all wildflowers have different soil needs. Do a soil test before planting to make sure you invest in a mix that will thrive.
  2. If you are dealing with excess shade, please reach out to us so we can help you pick a shade-friendly blend.
  3. Get weeds under control and the ground cleared.
  4. In warm climates, wait until 60 to 90 days before the first freeze to plant to give roots time to establish.
  5. In cold climates, plant in November or early December. Your wildflowers will come up in the spring. In the meantime, the ground will be cold enough to keep your seeds from sprouting.
  6. Scatter seeds evenly. Lightly rake or press dispersed seed into the soil.
  7. Keep moist through germination.

Also, be on the lookout and terminate pesky weeds that could out-compete your new wildflowers.

Yes, it is a good idea to provide your wildflower seed mix with irrigation if possible. Fill the soil profile to field capacity after seeds are planted. Water once or twice a day. This helps maintain adequate moisture levels.

After germination and depending on seed density, water once or twice a week until plants reach full establishment.

Do not overwater, as wildflowers are hardy and do not like soggy soil.

How long it takes wildflower seeds to mature depends largely on the type of seeds you are planting and the time of year. We highly recommend planting wildflowers in the fall after the first freeze. Naturally, the wildflowers will remain dormant until spring, with blooms arriving a month or two after germination.

Most native species will germinate in ten to fourteen days if temperatures are above 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
