- Other common name, “Blacksampson Echinacea”. Echinacea is from the Greek word “hedgehog”, a reference to the spiny bracts of the disk flowers.
- Flowers May to September.
- Adapted to dry soils of open, rocky prairies.
- The taproot can go down 5-8 feet, allowing it to survive periods of extended drought.
- The root of this plant contains pain-reducing compounds; chewing a small portion will numb the tongue. Native Americans used this plant to treat toothaches, sore throats, mumps, and burns. It was also used for treatment of distemper in horses.
