Occurs in nearly pure stands on alkaline or saline soils in valleys and meadows, sandy soils of desert foothills or roadsides, also dry and gravelly slopes.
Most abundant on moderately-moist alkaline soils of bottomlands where other species are not adapted.
Withstands flooding well.
Flowers April to September.
Seeds remain viable for many years.
Reproduces by seed and tillers.
Good value for livestock grazing.
Provide fawning cover for deer and nesting cover for bobwhites
