To prepare your site for planting a reclamation seed mix, follow these instructions:
- Plant a cover crop to eliminate future weed pressures. If you can’t plant a cover crop fallow the area for one growing season prior to planting.
- If fallowing, consider disking the area if there is no risk of erosion.
- Chemically terminate any weeds.
- Plant your grasses when temperatures reach 60 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. If weed pressures are minimal, you can also plant forbs and legumes.
- Plant forbs and legumes once grasses are established and weed pressure is minimized.
You can use a drilling or broadcasting method for planting seed.
Yes, it is a good idea to provide your reclamation seed mix with irrigation if possible. Fill the soil profile to field capacity after seeds are planted. Water once or twice a day. This helps maintain adequate moisture levels.
After germination and depending on seed density, water once or twice a week until plants reach full establishment.
How long it takes reclamation seeds to mature depends largely on the type of seeds you are planting. Most native species will germinate in ten to fourteen days if temperatures are above 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
