DETAILS:

  • Most identifiable characteristic is the long, dense hairs at the collar. Some seedheads may be partially enclosed in the upper sheaths or they may be fully emerged and open.
  • Distinct flag-like leaves are usually present at a right angle to the stem, just below the seedhead. This is most obvious during the winter months.
  • Reproduces from seed and tillers; growth is controlled by available moisture.
  • Fair-to-good grazing for livestock during the early stages of growth; palatability declines rapidly with maturity.
  • Adapted to open areas and disturbed sites; most common on sandy soils, but may occur on rocky and silty soils.
  • Not tolerant of wet soils.
