Also known as, “False indigo” and “Bastard indigo.”
This is a medium sized shrub, often clumped, branching, growing up to 18 feet tall.
Flowers May to June with the fruit maturing in August.
Prefers moist woods or stream banks, often on calcareous soils.
Bobwhite quail eat the seeds.
Livestock seldom eat this plant, and it is reported as poisonous to them.
