DETAILS:
Will produce bright orange, yellow or reddish flowers.
Flowers June to August.
When in bloom, this plant attracts butterflies and numerous other insects.
Adapted to dry, sandy or rocky soils of prairies, roadsides, and waste places.
Has a deep taproot which makes it very drought tolerant.
The Omaha and Ponca Indians used the roots to treat respiratory problems, as did the early pioneers.
Milkweeds are poisonous to livestock, but the plants are so unpalatable, livestock will not consume them by choice.
